Henry Symonds
The space evoked is indeterminate and references to nature remain oblique and largely suggestive with the purpose of luring the viewer into a speculative relationship with the work.
It responds to reflections and refractions of light on rain washed tarmac, illuminated interiors and vegetation cloaked in evening darkness. Historical or cultural associations, a sense of both space and place and/or a consideration of paint as a conveyer of meaning or enchantment might be evoked.
It is an iteration of contemporary lived experience - the suburban environment - which reaches back into the modernist tradition and beyond while engaging with the act of painting as it claims a position in contemporary discourse.
